Battles and Campaigns

The Battles and Campaigns category was intended to provide a well-rounded overview of a particular engagement or series of engagements. A few of the assignments on this page were posted by others at Helium, and these are sometimes framed in different terms; the Timeline of the Battle of the Somme is a good example of this. Most, however, follow a pattern that begins with a review of the strategic situation before the battle. The principal plans for the operation are considered, especially when they differ from the course of the battle in practice, as well as any significant preparation efforts. The course of the battle follows, concluding with notes about the consequences of the operation, both in the short and long term.
